Why is Fall Protection One of the Most Crucial Parts of Construction Safety?

Fall protection training is exceedingly important for construction sites. As stated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA falls are one of the most common causes of injuries and deaths in the construction industry.

In response to this problem, OSHA held a Safety Standdown to call attention to the need for fall protection and to provide employers and workers with the basics of avoiding such accidents.

  • 29 CFR 1926.503: This regulation addresses training requirements for workers engaged in construction activities that include a fall risk and ensures that workers are capable of recognizing hazards and using fall protection equipment properly.

  • Performing site-specific fall hazard identification and using appropriate controls, guardrails, covers, safety nets, etc.
  • Providing adequate training of workers on the use of fall protection equipment; Fitting of harnesses; Inspections; Emergency procedures, etc.
  • Regularly checking and maintaining fall protection systems and equipment in safe working condition.
  • Using guardrails, safety nets, toe-boards and other engineering controls to prevent falling from heights.
  • Establishing and implementing written fall protection policies and procedures, including a rescue plan for workers who do fall.
