OSHA cards are available as compact, wallet-sized cards you can keep on hand. In short, they simply come from completing an OSHA 10-hour or a 30-hour course.

OSHA cards are not considered a certification of any type by OSHA. Instead, the cards are your employer’s evidence that you have participated in training.

OSHA cards are occasionally referred to as “DOL cards.” Typically, this is the case if you earn your OSHA card via the OSHA Outreach Training Program.

Do I Need an OSHA Card?

OSHA does not require you to have an OSHA card to begin working. An OSHA card may or may not be required by your employer to get started.

OSHA 30-hour classes are for administrators and workers with job site safety supervisory responsibilities. More extensive and more centered on safety responsibilities than the OSHA 10 training.

There is also an OSHA 10 and 30 course for the marine, general and the construction trades. No other career fields or subject matter offers OSHA 10 and 30 courses or cards upon completion.

Does OSHA Have Training Requirements?

All employers are required by OSHA to create a place of employment that is free of hazards. Sometimes that includes the requirement to give their staff enough training in safety so they can work safely. Preparation for all training should be arranged and compensated for by the employer.

There are very few training obligations, other than those prescribed directly by OSHA. This is only working in special conditions or being certified to work some machines.

But many employers opt for requiring their employees to take an OSHA 10 course anyhow so that they are better equipped to respond and comply with workplace hazards, and are more amenable to safety practices.

Do OSHA Cards Expire?

OSHA cards do not expire. (However, there are some scenarios when you would be required to retake the corresponding OSHA 10 or 30-hour classes.) Your employer may ask that you take refresher training at an interval of 1-3 years. What’s more, if you lose the card, you have to retake the course — unless it’s before five years of when you first took the course.

How Do I Replace a Lost OSHA Card?

If you need to replace an OSHA card when you took the OSHA course that was done through the Outreach Program, then be sure to contact your instructor or the provider aligned under OSHA.

Once they have this information, the Outreach trainer will call their OSHA Education Center and make arrangements for a replacement person on your behalf.

One replacement OSHA card only is allowed, and there is a $45 charge for the replacement card. If you lose your card again after that, it must be repeated with the OSHA Outreach Training course associated with this particular card.

It is much easier to replace an OSHA card that was obtained through a Safety Counseling course. You only have to pull out your wallet card again and you are good to go.

What Are the Advantages of OSHA Card?

There are three significant advantages to having an OSHA card. These three benefits are:

  • Enhanced safety across the company – Completing OSHA 10 or 30-hour training means you’re a safer employee. In these programs, you discover several safety practices that keep employees safe and reduces the chances of injury as well as accidents.
