Steps to Take During an Active Shooter Attack
When an active shooter situation occurs, it’s essential to stay calm and take action. Managers should ensure all personnel evacuate safely by locking and barricading the doors, then leading them to a pre-planned safe zone. People should always have three options in mind: run away if possible, hide from view until help arrives, or fight back as a last resort. It’s important for everyone involved to be prepared both mentally and physically so they can protect their own life and the lives of others during such events.
Run
When faced with an active shooter in your workplace or vicinity, running away is the best way to protect yourself. Quickly map out the most accessible escape route and exit as soon as possible. Don’t take anything with you – keep your hands visible at all times. If able, help others evacuate and prevent anyone from entering where the shooter is located. Every moment counts; so stay alert and think fast for a successful escape plan!
Hide
When an active shooter situation arises, rapid escape isn’t always possible. If that’s the case, it’s best to find a place where you can take cover and stay out of sight from the perpetrator. Look for objects like furniture or other heavy items that will block any line of vision between them and you.
Once settled in your place of safety, lock all entry points to avoid unwanted guests. Remember though – don’t limit yourself too much in order not to restrict movement if needed later on. Remain silent at all times – even switch off your phone!
Fight
When your life is in unescapable danger, fighting may be the only option. Make sure you have a plan and are as aggressive as possible to incapacitate the active shooter. Yell loudly, grab anything around you that can be used as a weapon, and throw it at them with full commitment; this will give yourself the best chance of taking down the assailant. Be prepared to act quickly and decisively when fighting – every second counts!
Calling 911
If you’re safe and out of immediate danger, it’s time to ring 911. Be vigilant for any additional threats and help others if it’s safe to do so. When you’re on the line, you need to relay some key info to the 911 operator or police, like:
- Where are the victims and the shooter?
- How many shooters are there?
- What does the shooter look like?
- What kind of weapons do they have?
- How many people might be in danger?
Law Enforcement Arrival
When law enforcement arrives on the scene, their primary goal is to bring an active shooter situation to a close and neutralize any other potential threats. After that, officers quickly direct themselves towards where the last gunshot was heard. Their next priority is tending to those wounded in the incident by helping them get somewhere safe; they’ll also take note of witnesses for questioning and investigation purposes.
It’s essential for survivors and victims of an active shooter event not lose their composure – put down whatever you’re carrying, raise your hands with fingers outstretched, don’t make sudden movements or be loud – do as authorities tell you until it’s all clear enough for evacuation from the area. Do not leave until instructed by police personnel!
