OSHA 10-Hour Course Training Basics

The OSHA-10 Hour Course refers to the OSHA Outreach Training Program’s ten-hour training program. The goal of the course is to improve worker health and safety.

It is a resource that can educate workers on their rights in terms of workplace health and safety and general workplace risks. There are two choices; workers can take the OSHA 10-hour course designed for entry-level employees. In addition, there is a 30-hour OSHA course that is also available for managers or workers with some safety responsibilities.

The subjects taught required in an OSHA 10-Hour course are set in a simple framework by OSHA. OSHA 10 course content features three categories based on industry.

  • OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Course
  • OSHA 10 Hour Construction Course
  • OSHA 10 Hour Marine Course

Does OSHA 10-Hour Training Fulfill OSHA Training Requirements?

The OSHA 10-Hour Course program does not provide the necessary training to meet the OSHA standards. Therefore, employers must give supplemental training per OSHA requirements that apply to their company’s workplace.

OSHA 10-Hour training is necessary for some areas, therefore even if OSHA does not mandate it, it may be required in your job.

What Are the Benefits of the OSHA 10-Hour Course?

The following are some of the beneficial features of OSHA 10-Hour training:

• Encourages a safety culture by providing peer training with those who have done the hands-on work, usually OSHA-certified trainers.

• The training is designed to be interactive, with hands-on exercises.

• Trainers can customize training subjects to meet the individual needs of their group.

• Training in languages other than English is provided (Spanish, French, etc.)

• This training can be delivered on-site or via online learning.

What Topics Does the Training Cover?

The training consists of a mix of required, elective, and voluntary topics. Each of the three types of industries has its collection of subjects. The mandatory topics must be covered and for the minimum period stipulated by OSHA.

The course instructor chooses the elective subjects taught in the course from a list of industrial topics provided by OSHA. Instructors will determine the class subjects based on the audience’s demands, the industry, and the location. OSHA mandates that a certain number of these topics be covered.

The elective topics supplement the optional and mandatory subjects. Optional topics in OSHA 10 allow the trainer to tailor the content to fit site-specific circumstances while still meeting the ten-hour training requirement. During OSHA 10 training, if the instructor has not reviewed optional topics, he must devote more time to mandatory or elective subjects to offer 10 hours of training.

What Proof of Completion do You Receive?

Trainers submit documentation of the training to their Authorizing Training Organization upon completion of OSHA 10-Hour training. OSHA 10-Hour Students receive a certificate of completion at the end of the class. In addition, following the end of the training, OSHA 10 cards will be awarded. This card is wallet-sized and serves as certified documentation of completion of the course. OSHA 10 cards, except for those issued in Nevada, do not have an expiration date. In Nevada, OSHA 10 cards must be reissued every five years to course attendees.
