What Does an OSHA 10-Hour Construction Training Course Cover?
Designed for employees new to the workforce, the OSHA 10-Hour construction course provides 10 hours of entry-level safety training intended to increase worker’s basic awareness of workplace hazards as well as general information about workplace safety, job-related hazards, and basic principles of health and safety; providing learners the knowledge needed to successfully complete their jobs.
The completion of the course does provide learners with the means to obtain a DOL OSHA 10-card, recognized by the Department of Labor.
There are two ways the 10-Hour OSHA Construction courses can be delivered; via a classroom at Safety Counselling's facility at 2900 Wellesley Dr. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107 or on-site at the request of New Mexico companies or government agencies.
The official schedule of Safety Counselling’s 10-Hour OSHA Construction courses as well as Safety Counselling’s other OSHA Safety courses can be obtained via Safety Counselling's website.
Who Will Benefit From OSHA 10 Training?
Entry-level construction workers will benefit from OSHA 10 training because it will establish foundational knowledge for safe work. In many cases, this will be a prerequisite for employment, to gain access to jobs, or as part of a local or state requirement.
Workers in most entry-level construction positions typically fall under the following occupational categories:
- Carpenters
- Electricians
- Laborers
- Masons
- Plumbers
- Sheet Metal Workers
- Tile Workers
- Welders
Advance consideration should be given to OSHA 30 training (for those moving to lead/supervisor positions) due to OSHA 30 being a more comprehensive course and covering more topics in greater detail than the OSHA 10 course.
While OSHA does not require a worker to complete the OSHA 10 course to work in the construction industry, many employers, jobsite contracts, or local and state rules, may require an employee to have completed an OSHA 10 training course before the employee may be granted access to a job site.
What Will You Learn in OSHA 10-Hour Training?
Hazards vary according to job type and worksite; therefore, the topics of the OSHA 10 hour training courses vary by industry. An example of construction hazards would be the OSHA Focus Four or jobsite hazards such as stairs/ladders and excavations; whereas, general industry hazards would include walking/working surfaces, materials, hazard communication, and machine guarding.
Safety Counselling provides only the OSHA 10 Construction course, therefore Safety Counselling does not provide the OSHA 10-hour General Industry course.
Benefits of an OSHA 10 Certificate
For workers, having an OSHA 10 certificate will provide the employer with evidence of possible employment-ready safety knowledge; demonstrate an understanding of safety to employers; and meet jobsite/employer training expectations common to most construction workers.
You have the option to complete your OSHA 10 training through Safety Counselling’s open to the public classes each month. In addition, Safety Counselling offers OSHA 30 Construction-training classes; Safety Counselling has been a recognized OSHA authorized Outreach Training Provider for 53 years, and as such, clients recognize Safety Counselling as a leading OSHA safety training organization in New Mexico.
Successful completion of OSHA 10 will also result in receiving an official DOL OSHA 10 card. An official Department of Labor (DOL) OSHA 10 card can be obtained by successful completion of:
- Introduction to OSHA
- History of OSHA
- Role of OSHA in the workplace
- Who has rights through OSHA?
- What are the employer’s responsibilities?
